Hi Rachel, please introduce yourself.
My name is Rachel Trachtenburg ♥️ I was born in Seattle, but I’ve spent most of my life in NYC. I’ve studied drums with Steve Smith at the Seattle Drum School when my family lived there. Other than that I’m pretty much self taught. I’ve taken a few guitar lessons and hope to take more. My style and taste in music is very low-fi and do it yourself though.
What musicians inspire you?
Sam Coomes. Syd Barrett. Sibylle Baier. Kim Deal. Van Dyke Parks. Daniel Johnston. Jeffery Lewis. Stephen Malkmus.
What is different from when you started music and now?
I feel like my music is just growing up along with me. I’m in the recording studio working on my ep with Bryce Goggin right now. He’s done some of my favorite records. Everything is sounds so psychedelic and perfect.
I’m just now at the point in my life of doing only solo music. I have found the perfect people to play with and everything is coming together.
What is your inspiration for your lyrics?
Most of them come from something I’ll say in a conversation and it catches my ear and then I can turn it into something totally different. Lots of my songs have really personal meanings behind a very simple line. That makes it easier for me to stay attached to a song loner.
I also write songs about animal rights issues that I feel strongly about.
What do you think about being a musician in New York City?
It’s not easy. The living costs are very hard to keep up with. But I can’t imagine living anywhere else. There are so many bands, I don’t really go out that much though. I love being in such a big and busy city but also being able to fine peace in the parks and little tea shops.
What are your plans for 2016?
Release finished music and more music videos. And I guess see where the year takes me.
If you could go to any other state or country, where would you want to play?
Tokyo Tokyo Tokyo!!!!!!
